Glowing All Over!
David is 88 years old and comments with every workout we do
that he feels a glow all over.
It makes my day every time I see David and he says this! I tell him this feeling is blood flow (and maybe some endorphins). We are made to move! It makes us feel alive! The Glow. What a great thing!
Poor circulation is common in the older population. A big reason for this is inactivity. Exercise and physical activity are directly linked to healthy blood flow. Research has found that seniors that do not exercise have lower peak blood flow.

Strength training is a great way to combat age related muscle loss as well as pump blood through your veins, increasing your circulation.

If you are a senior and you are noticing that you are weak and have no energy, weight training will give you better strength and help you feel that blood flow! You can workout right at home with no equipment or just a few sets of dumbbells. David started with squats on a chair (sit to stands), pushups on the wall and step-ups on a low stair. No equipment at all! As he progressed and got stronger we got him 5, 8, 10 and 12 lb dumbbells. He told me the other day he thinks we need 15’s :).
Another day David was feeling his bicep, looking at me, he said, “I never had one of these before!” It is so awesome to see an 88 year old guy building muscle! Not to mention all the other health benefits! Check out my Blog on all the benefits of strength training here: Benefits of Strength Training.
David’s home exercise regime now includes the farmers walk with 10 lb dumbbells, using bands for his back, squats with weight, balance exercises and many upper body exercises using his weights and bands. I think 15lb dumbbells are in the very near future for this client of mine :).
Staying strong as you age and feeling the glow. Take it from David 🙂 It’s a win win.
