Summer’s here! I love having Basil on my back porch with its fresh, sweet smell just ready to be harvested. It’s one of my favorite herbs to grow. So many uses! Add it to a green smoothie, add it to salads, chop it up in homemade salad dressings, make pesto and much more! You can harvest it all summer if you keep up with it. It’s as easy as not letting it flower! Harvest it before you see it begin to flower at the top and it will keep on giving. If the plant is allowed to flower it puts its energy there, to make seeds, in order to regenerate itself. Pruning the basil prevents this, so you keep getting the awesome basil leaves to use all summer long! I just made a healthy, yummy celery salad with garden herbs this weekend, It is so much better with fresh basil! The recipe is below. Make use of these lovely summer herbs, they are so easy to grow and maintain. Again, just take a little time to trim the tops off before they flower and that little pot will keep giving all summer long. What is your favorite way to use basil from your garden? I’d love to hear. Comments welcome and appreciated!
Enjoy your summer friends,
Elissa XOXO
